IT’S a band that has had a close association with Huddersfield for more than 30 years.

But now the Savannah Jazz Band says its next concert in the area on September 6 may be its last at its current venue.

The band, which plays an instantly recognisable brand of New Orleans style jazz, appears once a month at the Royal British Legion Club in Golcar.

Despite being much in demand with an appearance booked at the Edinburgh Jazz Festival plus dates in Holland and Malta, audience numbers have fallen at Golcar.

“Unfortunately the level of attendance in the last 18 months does not sustain paying the band and expenses,” said the band’s leader John Meehan who is also its drummer.

“Therefore, reluctantly and unless there is a sudden upturn of interest, September 6 will be our last concert at the Royal British Legion at Golcar.

“This ends a 33 year association with the town where the band was formed in 1979 at Slaithwaite.

“We are continuing to play in Yorkshire at Leeds, Barnsley, Boston Spa and so on and we have a gig at Carr Gate Working Men's Club, Wakefield on September 12.”
