A UNIVERSITY professor from Huddersfield will be sharing his expertise in early music at a major festival in Beverley today.

Prof John Bryan will give a lecture at lunchtime today in Beverley Friary, the first of many events in the Beverley and East Riding Music Festival which runs throughout the weekend.

The professor will talk about Looking For Lost Sounds, Searching for the Early Viol.

The viols are a family of stringed instruments that predate the “modern” violin, viola, cello and double bass.

They were known in Europe as early as the 11th century and were heard at the court of Henry VIII who was introduced to the instruments by Italian and Flemish musicians.

Professor Bryan’s lecture looks at the relationship between the Tudor viol and the reconstructed family of Italian Costa viols as will be played on Saturday in a concert by the Rose Consort of Viols.

John Bryan is one of the Consort’s musicians who will play in a concert at Beverley Minster tomorrow lunchtime (12.30pm). The concert is called From Bologna to Britannia: Travels of the Early Viol Consort.
