The Diverso String Quartet, as its name suggests, is an ensemble comprising four musicians from diverse backgrounds - a cellist and violist from Poland and violinists from Germany and the UK.

Founded just three years ago it has quickly established itself as a tour de force on the European concert circuit and won a number of high-profile awards.

And so it’s something of a coup for Huddersfield Music Society to include Diverso in its ongoing concert programme at St Paul’s Hall of Huddersfield University.

The quartet can be seen and heard on Monday, February 8, playing a selection of pieces by Mozart, Janacek and Bartok.

As Verity Cridland, music society membership secretary, says: “We often feature young, up-and-coming soloists and ensembles who later go on to become well known.

“We have to be governed by our budget so we look for musicians who might be just starting out and then go on to establish themselves.”

For the society’s centenary celebrations next year it is hoped to invite back a number of such musicians who played in Huddersfield when launching their concert careers. Verity says: “We had the Sacconi Quartet when they were young and not known and the Carducci Quartet – we got hold of them because my sister in Ireland knows them. For our centenary season we are aiming to invite back some of the people we had before who went on to become well known.”

Finding top flight musicians for the society’s programmes often involves using personal contacts and musician networks. One of the members of Diverso, for example, cellist Sophie Lodygowska is married to Huddersfield University music tutor Robert Guy, who conducts Huddersfield Philharmonic and the Orchestra of the Square Chapel in Halifax.

Verity explains: “I heard Diverso playing at the Square Chapel, which is how we came across them. They are based in Manchester and Berlin and tour all over Europe.”

Diverso plays classical and contemporary music from all periods and has performed as far afield as Japan and Russia.

It comprises Dagmara Forys and Marcin Ostrowski on violins, Magdalena Kravchuk on viola and Sophie on cello.

As an ensemble the musicians have studied chamber music at the Berlin University of Arts and won the Berlin edition of Live Music Yehudi Menuhin Now.

Tickets for the concert, which starts at 7.30pm, are available on the door or from www.huddersfield-music-society.org.uk
