Two Huddersfield bars have mixed beer with bands in a series of collaborations with artists to help them ride the waves of radio success.

Bar 1:22 and Hand Drawn Monkey Brewing Company, which owns the HDM Beer Shop, have both been working hard on both sides of the bar to champion musicians by helping them to put out records.

Staff from both venues are leading the way in the pioneering idea, which they hope will highlight new music and undiscovered talent.

New Street venue, Bar 1:22, has put its money where its mouth is to help Huddersfield’s psychedelic inspired indie rock band, Cafuné, by paying for their debut EP to be recorded and produced by local producer, Isaac Grinsdale.

Called The Scenic Route To Nowhere, it will be launched at a gig at the venue on July 11 and marks the start of a new open-ended project by the bar to help local musicians on their way to success

Bar 1:22 manager, Oliver Craig, who approached the band to ask if they wanted to collaborate, said: “Our bar has a history of supporting young, talented local bands so we came up with this new idea of helping them to put out an EP to give them the opportunity to progress and develop.

“It’s a great project to be apart of-Cafune are a talented group and have recorded a fantastic debut EP and we’ve both learnt a lot from working together. “We are music fans here and just want to promote the talent we have in our town, which we have a bottomless well of, so this is going to be a continuing project.”

The band’s singer, Nick Granata, said: “We were overwhelmed, to be honest.

“It’s been a good few months and what they’ve done means a lot, it’s nice to have a base and work with someone who knows what they’re doing.”

Meanwhile, independent brewers, Hand Drawn Monkey Company, who run a bar in Wood Street and brew in Plover Road, Lindley, has been toasting the success of Huddersfield based record label, Cats? Aye! Records, by creating limited edition beers based on several of the bands it promotes.

They have so far launched three beers, including Hop Water Music, a reference to Hot Water Music and Bru-Cru, which was released in homage to Brighton-based GNARWOLVES, along with a cassette of the bands EP and plan to release more featuring Huddersfield bands later this year.

HDM Rob Allen said: “The collaboration started because Kevin began drinking in the bar and he was interested in beer so we thought it would be a good way to help bring bands into the area and promote a local label and bands.”

Label owner, Kevin Fenton, said: “We have many more brews planned with some crazy bands and I think that what the guys at the brewery are doing is great and is really doing good things for the town.”
