The Huddersfield Festival of Light is a well established festive favourite in town.

But as it approaches its 10th anniversary with the the Huddersfield Festival of Light 2013, it is becoming equally popular for its music.

This year will be no different with two nights of top tunes lined up for a big stage on King Street.

The mini-festival, starting next Friday, has been curated by Zephyr bar boss Lee Alderman and his team in partnership with Kirklees Council.

“We’ve spent about two months getting it all together and we’re really looking forward to it,” he said.

“We’ve done it for a couple of years now and it’s gone pretty well.

“Last year on one of the nights King Street was pretty much full and looked great with kids on dads’ shoulders.

“It’s got a nice gradient to it so it makes a great location.

“It’s great to have a chance to do this each year and the council have been very helpful.

“It’s something a bit different to having the bands in pubs.”

The line-up this year features some familiar faces and some of Huddersfield’s emerging talent.

The music begins at 6pm next Friday with hometown five-piece Du Dauphine.

The indie rockers will be followed at 7.30pm by Bradford’s feelgood Americana merchants, Down Reno.

The night is headlined by legendary Huddersfield funk-soul outfit Fat Stanley, who will take the stage from 9pm.

Saturday, December 7, is headlined by electro-rockers Kava Kava with support from fellow local lads Ilovecolour at 7.30pm.

An opening band is to be confirmed.

Lee said they were really pleased with the bands that had signed up for this year’s shows.

He said: “We get quite a few bands coming to us during the year asking to be involved.

Kava Kava are really well known and have obviously been around for a while.

“Ilovecolour are a hard working band that we know and Fat Stanley are a really good, upbeat crowd pleasers.

“They’re a positive bunch, one of those bands that can swap instruments.

“There’s about 11 of them on stage and the singer, Ross Taylor, has a fantastic really good gravelly, soulful voice.

“Du Dauphine have done a couple of gigs including at the Zephyr and it’s a nice chance for them to get more exposure.

“They’re quite funky, and again a band that play a range of instruments and they were really keen to be involved.”

The event is free and will be part of a host of activities on offer in the town centre during the Festival of Light.
