Were you lucky enough to bag tickets for Prince's gig at Leeds First Direct Arena on May 23?

Well it seems you're in for a treat - critics and reviewers have been raving about The Purple One's recent shows, from secret, last-minute gigs in London to sold-out shows that saw die-hard fans happily queuing in the Manchester rain.

Prince is renowned for his live performances, and his band, 3rd Eye Girl, are also receiving critical acclaim.

Here's what the critics have had to say so far...

Ben Beaumont-Thomas of the Guardian : "These are performances by one of the greatest funk-rock bands ever."

"In the end, he balances earthly immediacy and heavenly art like no other musician."

Neil McCormick of the Telegraph : "Scruffy London rock clubs may not be his usual setting, but Prince stood imperious in a blaze of light, fake flames and dry ice, making a sharp silhouette of afro hair, sleek flares and a guitar brandished like a lethal weapon."

"Arguably the most gifted individual in contemporary pop, Prince has been brilliant for so long we have probably started to take him for granted."

Ryan Hooper of the Independent : "Standing behind a microphone stand decorated with his “love symbol” insignia, Prince stormed his way through a 30-minute set, and a cover of Wild Cherry’s classic “Play That Funky Music”, which saw him swap his guitar for a slap bass and then back again."

Sarah Walters of the Manchester Evening News : "You get the feeling that, between them, Prince and his band could outplay any artist in any genre. He does funk, rocknroll, pop and heavy metal more skilful and more blistering than most."

Sean Adams of Drowned in Sound : "All of the new material is incredible and sounds as rich and magical as any of the many life-punctuating tracks that led us  here  (although, looking around, a few of us in attendance were most probably conceived in the post  Purple Rain  baby boom too)."

"The Purple One is not one of us, he is vapour, he may not be mortal. He is something we will never comprehend."

Dan Kay of the Liverpool Echo : "The promise to truly engage was fulfilled and then some, with some lucky punters getting to groove on-stage with their hero, but such was the age-defying 55-year-old’s ability to connect with his legions via music, words and simple, corner-of-the-eye glances it felt like we’d all had a private audience. The man is just a born performer."
