Legendary hip-hop bands are to delight fans in Kirklees.

World-renowned The Sugarhill Gang and Grandmaster’s Furious Five’s Scorpio and Melle Mel are set to turn Batley into an old school hip-hop paradise when they hit the Frontier nightclub on July 25.

The Sugarhill Gang’s dance floor fillers Rapper’s Delight, 8th Wonder and Apache and Grandmaster’s Furious Five’s White Lines and The Message may all be heard live on their night when they perform as a double bill as part of their UK tour.

And fans will also have the first chance to hear The Furious Five’s brand new single, Light.

The impressive booking was made possible by Nick Westwell, who said he has known the US groups, who formed in the 1970s for years.

He said: “I’ve known them all for a while because I’ve been in the industry for a long time.

“It’s a big gig and those who are at the show will hear the first ever Furious Five single to be released in 20 years.

“This is not a DJ set, this is a live stage show that will bring all of your favourites together in a high energy performance.

“After months of planning and preparation, this event is a must for rap and hip hop fans from all generations and anyone who loves to party – it will take people back to the origins of rap music.

“They’ll be flying straight in from the USA as part of the world tour.”

The Sugarhill Gang, which comprises of Wonder Mike (Michael Anthony Wright) and Master Gee (Guy O’Brien) are still going strong despite losing one third of their act, Big Bank Hank (Henry Lee Jackson), who died from cancer last November.

According to US Public Service Broadcasting, they have sold over eight million records and were one of the first rap groups to bring hip-hop and the rap culture into mainstream consciousness.

Grandmaster’s Furious Five rose to fame in the 1980s with The Message but the group later split due to a fall out over their label Sugar Hill Records, which The Sugarhill Gang were also signed to.
