ITALIAN pianist Alessandro Taverna opens the new season of Huddersfield Music Society concerts on Monday.

The 28-year-old pianist was born in Caorle near Venice.

Two years ago, he took third place in the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition.

At Monday’s concert (October 10) in St Paul’s Hall he will play Mendelssohn’s Fantasy in F-sharp minor, op. 28, Chopin’s Sonata No. 3 in B minor, op. 58 and Two Nocturnes, op. 62, Busoni’s Kammer-Fantaisie über Carmen and Overture de Guillaume Tell de Rossini by Liszt.

Alessandro Taverna, 28, was born in Caorle near Venice.

He began his piano studies at the Music Academy of Santa Cecilia in Portogruaro and graduated 10 years ago from the Conservatorio C. Pollini in Padua in 2001.

Alessandro has won numerous awards in national and international competitions.

Three years ago he was a semi-finalist at the sixth Hamamatsu International Piano Competition in Japan and at the UNISA International Piano Competition in Pretoria.

Two years ago, he won second prize in the London International Piano Competition having played Chopin’s Concerto No.1 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall.

Alessandro has performed with the Citta di Grosseto Symphony Orchestra under Enrique Batiz, the Kremlin Chamber Orchestra directed by Misha Rachlevsky, the Vicenza Olimpico Theatre Orchestra and the Trento Chamber Orchestra. He has played in concert halls throughout Italy and Europe and toured the major cities of South Africa.
