They could be the offspring of Metronomy or MGMT.

Huddersfield trio Palmes are loving the creative simplicity that a pile of synthesisers can bring.

We caught up with singer and guitarist Ryan Smith following the release of their first single, All Grey.

How did you end up getting together?

Ash Haworth (bass) and Callum Taylor (drums) all went to the same primary school at Outlane, now Moorlands. No one played instruments in our year but we found more people at college. That’s where we met a guy called Will who we were in Pin Stripe Tuesday with until it ran out of steam last year.

That was a good trial and error process– we honed our writing, singing and how to be a band.”

What did you realise?

“The importance of regular releases was one thing and we realised that we didn’t want to be in the oversaturated indie rock scene any more. Now it’s all about the synthesisers.

Your first single, All Grey, has just dropped– congratulations! It’s got one of those great, catchy synth loops that just sound really good in the summer. How’s it doing so far?

“It’s going well. We actually recorded it a while ago so it’s not our final sound.

“We’ve actually settled more into a more Pulp sound, with our own mark of course.

“We write and play the music we want to listen to–I really like Chvrches and MGMT.”

It’s already been played on BBC Introducing in West Yorkshire.

Palmes

“Yes, we weren’t expecting to get on there so soon.

“We only have a few followers at the moment so it’s nice for him to play us based on our music rather than based on a band’s amount of fans.”

What plans do you have for the single?

“Well, we played some gigs but they weren’t really single launches so we’re just getting ready to release the second now. We want to get something released every three months.

“We’re back in the studio already, believe it or not.

“We recorded our second single, TV, a couple of months ago and are now getting started on our third and fourth.

“There’s going to be a bit more retro synth sounds coming from us but we’re really keen on exploring all the possibilities of using synths.”

I guess you don’t lug all your synthesisers to your live shows?

“Ha yes, we’ve got five synth parts so the logistics of playing with them live would be too much.

“We build all the tracks up on a computer and play live with a sampler, two guitars and drums.

“We were looking for a singer for a bit but didn’t find one so I kept doing it which is a bit strange for me but seems to be working fine. The others do some too.”

It is amazing what you can do with even simple to use music programmes these days.

“Definitely. We use Logic Pro and I’ve got a Massive synthesiser which is cracking, you get huge sounds. I’d recommend that to anyone interested in synths.”

You’ve already played the likes of the Parish and in Manchester and Leeds, is this where you’ll continue to concentrate.

“Yeah, we built up some good contacts through Pin Stripe Tuesday which has helped us. We’ve played at the Wardrobe several times with our old band and once as Palmes.

“They’ve got a great PA system, which is quite hard to find in venues. The Parish in Huddersfield has a really good one too now but at the minute we’re just trying to get as many other gigs as we can and to try broaden where we play to cities like Newcastle, Liverpool etc.”
