She's the latest top singer to head for what is renowned as a musical town.

Irish soprano Margaret Keys joins the glittering list of major musicians and performers who over the years have appeared in concert in Huddersfield Town Hall.

Next month, the internationally recognised singer will be the guest of Skelmanthorpe Male Voice Choir.

They will share the spotlight at a choir fund-raising event on September 7.

It is undoubtedly the biggest event in the choir’s busy schedule of events this year but one which they are extremely proud of.

Margaret is currently Ambassador for Derry, the 2013 UK City of Culture. She was a primary school teacher before deciding to take a break and concentrate on her musical career.

And it has seen her talents rewarded with a recording contract and concert appearances with choirs and or5chestras from around the world.

Margaret began her singing training at the McCafferty School of Music in Derry when she was just four.

By the time she was 15, her musical talent was clearly outstanding as she was awarded a medal by Trinity College of Music, London for the best overall performer in music examinations.

And though she worked as a teacher, her heart was clearly in music.

While studying for her degree at St Mary’s University College, Belfast, Margaret continued her vocal training at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin.

She won a scholarship to train for a Masters degree at the prestigious Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

After graduating Margaret began work as a primary school teacher and music specialist in Derry, Northern Ireland.

She combined this with her music career playing the lead role of Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady and the young Irish singer, Katy Tourish, in the tour of the new Irish play, A Miracle in Ballymore.

Five years ago, Margaret entered the BBC talent show How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria and worked alongside Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and top West End coaches.

That same year she was winner of the RTÉ Radio 1 Search for a Musical Star and played the role of Carrie in the RTÉ Production of Carousel with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra.

The success story continued as Margaret won the New York Artist Award which allowed her to travel to Broadway where she trained and worked with Broadway stars and with Opera New York vocal coaches.

Since then she has performed with a host of celebrity singers including Alfie Boe, as well as numerous choirs and orchestras from around the world.

She is widely applauded as a classical crossover soprano and has a record deal with Universal Records.

In next month’s concert in Huddersfield, she will share the platform with Skelmanthorpe Male Voice Choir whose singers will be conducted by the choir’s musical director, Jane Hobson.

Jane, who is also much in demand as a singer, conducts Hobsons Chorus, a small male voice chorus, plus Penistone Ladies Choir .
