Brass band fans are in for a treat this weekend with a massed bands concert at Huddersfield Town Hall.

And it will be conducted by a musician with strong Huddersfield connections.

For leading tomorrow’s concert (October 26) – which is promoted by Brighouse & Rastrick Band – will be former Skelmanthorpe resident, Ian Porthouse.

Ian is bringing along his band, Tredegar from South Wales, and as guest conductor for the evening has chosen a popular programme of music which is sure to please a large town hall audience.

Ian is Cumbrian by birth but music brought him via Lancashire to this area and, when living here from 1997 until 2003 he was principal cornet with Yorkshire Building Society Band, who were based at Lindley.

He subsequently became musical director of Pennine Brass, based at Crosland Hill and says that no matter where he has played in the world, Huddersfield Town Hall remains his favourite venue

Tredegar Town Band has made tremendous strides under Ian’s leadership and only last month won the prestigious British Open title at Birmingham Symphony Hall.

Brighouse & Rastrick’s playing that day also thrilled a capacity audience but, unfortunately, the adjudication panel placed them below the prize winners on that occasion. However Brighouse and Rastrick are still Yorkshire’s most successful contesting band over the last decade, supported by an enviable concert engagement list.

Heavy snow last March decimated the numbers who should have attended the last Massed Bands concert so now is a great opportunity to catch up with one of the north’s unique musical events.

The concert will start at 7.15pm. Tickets from all the usual Kirklees outlets.
