HUDDERSFIELD teens Angels Playing Saints are one step from the Leeds Festival.

The unsigned Salendine Nook High School rock band have made it through to the final of Centre Stage where the top prize is a slot on the BBC Introducing stage at both Reading and Leeds.

The competition is backed by the Pigeon Detectives and Embrace drummer Mike Heaton and will be judged by Leeds festival supremo Melvin Benn.

Frontman Ryan Waters, 16, said they had seen the contest on Look North and had asked their school to back them.

He said: “All the bands were great and we’re really looking forward to the final and the chance to play at Leeds and Reading.

“We’re really excited and we’ll give it our best.”

The band, who gig around Huddersfield, are planning a charity gig for Martin House at Huddersfield YMCA on May 28 from 7pm.

Centre Stage, which also raises money for Martin House, a hospice for terminally ill children, is already accepting entries for its 2011 contest.
