Huddersfield Jazz continues to bring top musical talent to the town.

Tomorrow, it will be the talents of the Jay Phelps’ Quartet filling the Lawrence Batley Theatre’s Cellar space with music that swings.

Trumpeter Jay Phelps leads a group of young musicians dedicated to contemporary swing music though with a clear understanding of what is both modern and traditional.

This is seen as a fresh and exciting band which mixes its set with jazz standards and original compositions from Jay himself.

A Vancouver-born Canadian, Jay was tutored by the city’s top jazz and classical trumpeters and distinguished himself early on as the youngest band-leader in the Vancouver International Jazz Festival’s history.

When he was 17, Jay moved to London, determined to immerse himself in the jazz scene. It didn’t take long for his musical talent to get noticed.

Jay has performed and recorded with a veritable who’s who of both UK and international jazz artists tour.

But he has also toured with his own quartet, leads his own Jay Phelps Big Band project featuring BBC Radio 2’s Clare Teal and is also featured in a diverse range of bands.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Jay is seen as being at the forefront of the young and creative generation of jazz musicians in the UK, with an instantly recognisable warm and projecting tone.

The performance will preview new music from Jay’s highly anticipated second album.

The music starts at 8pm and tickets are available on 01484 430528.
