Despite a hiccup over visas, a pair of award-winning musicians  based in Ukraine return to New Mill this weekend.

The Kyiv Classic Accordion Duo has played at New Mill church for several years to raise money for families still suffering from the Chernobyl disaster.

“When the Duo submitted an application for the tour, they were initially turned down as having applied for the wrong type of visa,” said Geoffrey Lockwood.

“Following a last-minute re-application, including letters from various organisations in the UK including myself, who had booked them, I’ve just  found out that they have been successful in obtaining a visa, and so they will be travelling to the UK this  weekend.”

The two musicians, Igor Sayenko and Oleksiy Kolomoiets,  are virtuoso performers on button accordions.

Their home town is close to the site of the  nuclear plant disaster –  which is why they continue to use their musical skills to help support survivors.

Their concert at Christ Church, Sude Hill New Mill on Sunday (July 14, 7.30pm) is called View through the Centuries.

It will  include arrangements of music by Bach (his famous Toccata & Fugue in D minor), Gluck (Dance of the Furies), Grieg (Three pieces from the Peer Gynt suite), Faure (Pavane), Stravinsky (Russian dance from Petrushka), Karl Jenkins (Palladio), and, perhaps less familiar to local audiences,  original accordion music by Skoryk, Derbenko, Vlasov, Piazolla and Gridin.

Refreshments will be available, and tickets at the door or in advance from the church will be £5.
