If you have never been to one of the lunchtime concert series at Huddersfield Town Hall, now’s your chance.

If Gordon Stewart, Kirklees Borough Organist, isn’t playing– and he is at a dozen of the 16 planned for this season – then he will still be the guiding hand behind the concerts.

And it shows. For in addition to the sheer quality of the performers (and, yes, that most definitely includes Gordon) the other stand-out ingredient is the atmosphere.

These concerts are renowned not just for quality music but for a warm welcome and a sheer sense of enjoyment. When Gordon’s around there’s plenty of banter too.

He kicks off the new run of concerts on Monday (October 7) when he is joined on the Huddersfield Town Hall stage by the New World Orchestra led by Andy Long.

Together they will perform a programme which includes concertos by Handel and by York-based composer Andrew Carter.

The Carter Organ Concerto was written for a church in the USA but had its UK premiere in Huddersfield.

It was performed on that occasion by the same line-up of musicians – Gordon Stewart and the New World Orchestra.

Monday’s concert begins at 1pm (October 7) and tickets are 5 (3.50 concessions) from Kirklees Box Office on 01484 223200 or by simply paying on the door. Lunches will be available in the Old Court Room prior to the concert.

The full series is listed in the current Kirklees concert season brochure.
