THE CHAKRAS: Build Me A SwanEvery now and then an album comes along that can take your breath away – and this is one of those moments. The Dublin-born now London-based five piece have crafted their own brand of epic, almost psychedelic yet almost always melodramatic soft rock. And that’s before we get onto the crushed velvet husk of the vocals. They sure know how to put layer upon layer to give their sound a depth, quality and a mesmerising power that’s rarely heard. The standout moment is Blinded – a song that’ll light up 10,000 lighters once they get into the stadium settings their sound demands. It doesn’t come much bigger or, paradoxically, softer. One of the albums of the year so far.
SWITCHFOOT: Vice Versus.Rock as it should be from the Californian band that features a drummer who hails from London. It’ll get into your mind and your soul and will give you biting political satire to remember, never more so than the largely spoken Selling The News. One minute hard rock, the next big melodic soaraway moments and then they finally show they’re natural balladeers.
