They are not known affectionately in some quarters as the Welsh Wizards for nothing.

After all, the Cory Band is the world’s number one brass band and big favourites here in Huddersfield.

For many years, the South Wales band has travelled north each Christmas to partner Honley Male Voice Choir in a festive concert which is always an essential part of the festive season for many.

Now the band is to play again in Huddersfield Town Hall, but this time in its own right.

The band plays the Town Hall on September 14 just weeks after returning from its Australian tour.

It has spent part of this month on an 11-date tour Down Under for which the band commissioned an exciting new piece from composer Dan Price, called Dreamtime.

The piece is inspired by Aboriginal mythology, and features the sound of the didgeridoo.

Currently ranked number 1 brass band in the world and the current Brass in Concert champions, these musicians have been wowing audiences throughout the globe this year.

The band, which is from the Rhondda Valley, will bring that award winning programme with it.

Cory has also performed in Huddersfield alongside Brighouse and Rastrick Band but this concert offers the band a unique opportunity to feature its full concert programme.

That also means the Huddersfield audience will get to hear its complete compliment of world class soloists.

As well as performing concerts throughout the World in 2013, Cory Band is set to release no less than five CD recordings.

The band was crowned European Champions in Oslo in May beating bands such as Black Dyke and Leyland from England and Eikanger from Norway.

Cory will be directed by their Director of Music, Philip Harper who has been directing the band for the last 15 months. They have worked well together, adding a new dimension to concert and contest stage.

Cory Band celebrates its 130th year next year and is very proud of its Welsh heritage which is featured in the concert programmes.

This year, the band has developed the Cory Academy which works with children on a weekly basis to teach them to play a brass instrument and inspire the next generation of performers.
