HUDDERSFIELD is preparing to rock when the “Welcomefest,” the town’s best independent music festival, opens its doors for a second time.

The festival, at Lockwood Park on Saturday, June 15, will bring together an amazing selection of local and regional talent with musicians playing rock, funk, soul, blues and country music.

The line-up includes eight bands – plus solo artist Roger Davies, the famous Brighouse folk singer who was commissioned by the BBC to write a song to celebrate the West Yorkshire Leg of the 2012 London Olympic Torch Relay.

His song, “Carry that Fire”, has won huge acclaim.

Other performers include the Rag-Tags, who supported Mumford and Sons at Greenhead Park last year, TC’s Funky Nuts, The Feeds, and Huddersfield’s finest groove merchants Kava Kava – the local band with a worldwide reputation.

The festival is a non-profit venture and the proceeds will be divided between the Welcome Centre – a local charity which helps people in crisis – and the rugby club.

Last year’s event was held in a large back garden in Birkby and was a huge success.

This year organisers have moved it to the bigger venue of Lockwood Park Rugby Club to make the most of the growing popularity of the event.

Unlike many outdoor festivals, Welcomefest will provide shelter to ensure that the event will proceed smoothly even if the weather is inclement. So even if June 15 is a wet one, the festival won’t be rained off!

The entry fee is £15 per person and will buy you 11½ hours of quality entertainment with food and a licensed bar provided. Children under 16 will be admitted free if accompanied by their own parents.

Full details of the line-up and how to buy tickets, which must be bought in advance, are available from the festival website www.welcomefest.co.uk.
