IT MAY be the time many of us dread, the countdown of shopping days to Christmas.

But Kirklees Culture and Leisure Services have decided to try and lighten the load by giving shoppers in Huddersfield and Dewsbury a pre-Christmas treat with the festive sounds of open-air brass band music.

The concerts are free and will see some of the best bands in the area playing at times when the two town centres are expected to be at their busiest with shoppers.

If you are out and about in Huddersfield’s New Street on the Saturdays in the December run-up to Christmas then listen out for bands playing, with intervals, between 11am and 3pm.

On December 8 the Yorkshire Traction and Honley Band will be out to entertain the crowds, followed on December 15 by Slaithwaite Silver Band and by Emley Band on December 22.

Across in Dewsbury the Market Place will be the musical hub with Shepley Band doing the honours on December 8.

Linthwaite Band appear on December 15 and Innovate Skelmanthorpe Band on December 22. This last session starts at the earlier time of noon.

For those who prefer to enjoy their music in the warmth of a town hall there will also be the regular lunchtime concerts in both Huddersfield and Dewsbury.

The popular Huddersfield University Brass Band will play a new programme, along with carols, at a concert in Huddersfield Town Hall on December 10 at 1pm and again at Dewsbury Town Hall on December 12 at 12.30pm.

Concert tickets are £3 (£2 concessions) with tickets available from Kirklees Booking Offices, by phoning 01484 223200 or by paying on the door.
