Fifteen bands are expected to contest this year’s Pogson-Bray brass band competition.

The venue is Berties Banqueting Hall in Brook Street, Elland; the date is Sunday October 20.

All the bands will play their own entertainment programme which will include a march.

This is the format which has been in place in recent years for a contest which was originally set up after the death of lifelong brass band supporter Mrs Evelyn Bray.

Mrs Bray was a teacher for over 40 years and head of Crosland Moor Infants School for 22 years.

She was brought up in brass band circles and in addition to being president of Huddersfield and District Brass Band Association for many years, served the movement at national level too.

She left money in her will to establish a fund to run a brass band contest.

The contest this year starts at 10am and will be adjudicated by Gareth Brindle.

The competing bands are: Clifton and Lightcliffe B, Dinnington, Elland, Emley, Hade Edge Youth, Horbury, Huddersfield and Ripponden, Huddersfield and Ripponden Youth, Lindley, Oughtibridge, Ripon City, Scissett Youth, Slaithwaite, Thurcroft and Thurlstone.

There is a £5 entrance fee and refreshments will be available all day.
