The sound of music has filled one school after a successful Mrs Sunderland competition.
Musical Rastrick High School pupils entered several sections of the top music festival, held at Huddersfield Town Hall and tasted many successes.
Alison Pryce Jones directed the Junior Choir where pupils gave an energetic performance of the Russian folk song Kalinka followed by ‘We can be kind’ and received praise from the adjudicator Sam Dunkley.
The Chamber choir were placed first for their performance of ‘Two Traditional Love Songs’ followed by an unaccompanied arrangement of ‘Holding out for a Hero’ and were awarded a special trophy for the best performance in any choir class during the day.
The Senior choir gave an accomplished performance of ‘Prayer of the Children’ followed by an energetic arrangement of ‘What shall we do’, based on the well known sea shanty, and came third.
Several Rastrick students also gave solo performances - Gaia Hinchliffe in the Girls Solo (School Years 10 & 11) section, Jake Adams in the Young Men’s Solo (Broken voice) and Charlotte Town in the Girls Solo (School Years 8 & 9). In the Junior Music Theatre section, Georgia Collier also took first place with her rendition of a song from ‘Annie’. There were wonderful performances from other vocalists including Charlotte Reason, Grace King, Annabel Collier, Hettie Bowers, Rebecca Carr, Jake Adams, Rhian Cairns, Gaia Hinchliffe, Georgia Collier, Alice King, Ellie Salmon, Charlotte Town and Andrew Featherstone.
Cornet player Bethan Plant gained a first placing in the Brass Solo Trumpet/Cornet Solo section playing her own choice of a Slow Melody while Lydia Wyatt gained first place for both Piano Solo (Sonata) and also Piano Solo (Chopin) and also a first on Flute in the Woodwind/Recorder section.
