BATLEY Art Gallery’s annual open exhibition is in full swing until November 15.

A diverse mix of work is on display, including photography, oils, watercolours and mixed media work. Both abstract art and traditional work feature.

Artists were invited to submit work for inclusion.

From the work submitted more than 70 pieces by 31 artists were selected.

Tony Chisholm, Richard North and exhibition co-ordinator Mark Milnes had the job of choosing the items.

Tony’s background is in arts education, working at various schools and colleges for more than 35 years.

Richard studied at Batley School of Art and Design before running his own graphic design company for about 20 years.

Mark has been running the gallery at Batley for the past two years and is a familiar face to library users, as he also works behind the library counter.

In addition, he is development officer at the West Yorkshire Print Workshop at Eastthorpe, Mirfield.

He said of the show: “We’re very grateful to all of the artists who have taken the time to contribute to the Šexhibition. Obviously, the show wouldn’t happen without them and it’s always sad to have to reject work.

“We’re keen to keep the open exhibition as a regular fixture in the gallery programme and the quantity of applications certainly suggests that it is a popular event for local artists.

“I’m sure that visitors will enjoy the wide variety of artistic styles on show; with such a range of work, there really is something for everyone.’’

The gallery is on the first floor of the library building and is accessible via stairs or lift.

Artists came from Huddersfield, Leeds, Wakefield and North and South Yorkshire to submit work.

Featured artists include Batley-based Tony Noble, Damian Clark, Karen Stansfield and Carrie Scott-Huby.

Paul Airy, who won this year’s Saltaire Arts Trail open exhibition, has two prints on show.
