Bargain-hunters have already made Huddersfield’s new BHS food store a big success – just 48 hours after it opened.

The food outlet, inside the BHS department store at The Shambles, has been busy since first opening its doors on Tuesday.

The ‘soft opening’ gave price-conscious shoppers an early chance to cash in with special offers and vouchers offering £2 off the first £10 spent.

Huddersfield town crier Vic Watson officially opened the store today when he cut the ribbon, toasted by store manager Anne McNab and her staff – with glasses of orange juice.

The BHS Food Store is one of 20 launched throughout the country by the company, which has previously concentrated on clothing and homeware, and comes in response to shoppers’ changing habits.

The food outlet has created 15 full, part-time and weekend jobs, bringing the total number of staff to 60 in Huddersfield.

Ms McNab said: “We have been extremely busy, and the response from customers has been fantastic.

New BHS Food Store opens in The Shambles, Huddersfield.

“People’s shopping habits have changed. Gone are the days of one big weekly shop. Now people think: ‘I’ll get something for tea,’ so the convenience element really appeals to customers.”

BHS is running a number of deals to attract people into the food store including three bottles of wine for £10. Top sellers so far are biscuits, crisps and grapes.

BHS has teamed up with wholesaler Booker and hopes to take sales from supermarkets as well as the likes of Marks & Spencer.
