Discount clothing and homeware firm TK Maxx looks set to open a new store in Huddersfield.

The firm, which already has a store in the Kingsgate shopping centre has applied to open a store at the Great Northern Retail Park.

It is not known if it plans to run two stores in Huddersfield or if any additional jobs will be created.

The company refused to confirm to the Examiner what its plans were until an official opening date had been set.

But plans lodged with Kirklees Council show it hopes to take over the defunct JJB Sports unit, next door to Pets At Home.

The large shop has been empty since JJB Sports folded in 2012.

The sports retailer closed its two other stores in Kingsgate and New Street, four years earlier.

The retail park has a history of traffic problems.

Last November shoppers reported waits of more than hour to get out of the popular shopping area off Leeds Road.
