SOUNDS and images will bring to life the world of storytelling in a new exhibition which opens tomorrow at Batley.

Internationally acclaimed lantern maker Karima Ellis has used willow and tissue paper to create a giant sculpture in the shape of an elephant which will be the centrepiece of the exhibition.

The shadow puppets, masks, textile arts, creative writing and willow lanterns which will be on display have been inspired by the stories brought to Kirklees by professional storytellers as part of an Arts Council project, Stories From The Tree Of Life.

Masks included in the show represent archetypes from the world of storytelling - characters which can be traced in stories throughout the ages.

Andy and Gill Burton of Colne Valley based Satellite Arts have created a storytelling soundtrack to accompany the exhibition which runs until January 10 at Batley Art Gallery which is in Batley Library.

The gallery opens between 9.30am and 7pm on Mondays and Wednesdays, between 9.30am and 5pm on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and between 9.00am - 4.00pm on Saturdays.
