IF YOU want an evening of light entertainment then look no further than the Semitones.

This is a Huddersfield-based concert party packed full of musical talent. Head for Netherton Methodist Church next Saturday, April 20, to hear five of its seven members.

Thanks to the Semitones’ spread of interests its concerts offer singers and instrumentalists and bags of humour too.

David Jagger, one of the group’s founder members, sings with Honley Male Voice Choir and has also sung with Longwood, Woodhouse and Huddersfield Light Opera Societies. Look to David for songs from the shows, both comedy and ballads.

John Beevers, a past member of the Melodians concert party, is the musician with the ukulele skills and the ability to bring George Formby songs to life.

Kirsty Haigh is a well-known young singer in the area. She took centre spot at a Last Night of the Proms concert at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in November but also sings with rock bands, Red Wing Hawks and Wispering Jim.

Kirsty is lead singer with the latter and when she’s got a spare minute from all of that, she’ll be hopping on the Penistone line music train to sing with an Abba Band.

For comedy, look no further than the group’s Alan Woodhead who they describe as 82 years young.

Alan has performed for the Owls at Huddersfield Town Hall and Sports Centre. He says he got some of his comedy ideas from his dad and is known for his deadpan delivery.

If you are a Gilbert and Sullivan fan then you will know Becky Gregson Flynn.

She’s taken leads with various local G and S societies and is currently directing a show at Batley.

Expect to hear comedy duets and Ivor Novello songs.

Ann Drake is another familiar face from local operatic societies. She sings songs from the shows plus jazz ballads.

Ever present is Judith Helm, who is not only the group’s secretary but its piano accompanist. Judith is a gifted performer in her own right.

She sings folks songs with guitar, is a member of Huddersfield Gilbert and Sullivan Society, and a member of Slubbing Billys morris dancing side where she dances and plays fiddle in the band.

At this church fundraiser at Netherton next week (7.30pm) Judith, David, Alan, Kirsty and John will be performing.
