A stage adaptation of the Oscar-nominated classic The Shawshank Redemption brings a tale of hope, struggle and redemption to Leeds Grand Theatre this week.

Starring Doctors' Ian Kelsey and Casualty's Patrick Robinson as wronged banker Andy Dufresne and prison fixer Ellis 'Red' Redding, the production brings the claustrophobic walls of Shawshank to the stage in this new production.

Based on the Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption , the story explores an unusual friendship between Andy and Red as they serve life sentences in the high-security prison.

Andy's protestations of innocence are dismissed by Warden Stammas — and when the callous Warden exploits his talents for accountancy and bullies Andy into subservience, a desperate plan is quietly hatched.

The 1994 feature film The Shawshank Redemption, starring Tim Robbins as Dufresne and Morgan Freeman as Red, was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Freeman.

This new production is directed by award-winning Broadway director David Esbjornson, adapted by Owen O’Neill and Dave Johns.

The Shawshank Redemption is at Leeds Grand Theatre until Saturday September 5.

Tickets cost £18.50-£35.
