There are a busy few weeks ahead for the singers of Honley Male Voice Choir.

They will be hoping for fine weather and a big crowd next week when they sing in the bandstand In Huddersfield’s Greenhead Park.

The choir hopes its talent will not just entertain the Saturday afternoon crowds (August 10, 2pm to 4pm), but bring in a few more recruits.

Two massive banners have been put up at the two main entrances to the park announcing the choir’s appearance in the park.

And on the day, the choir’s supporters will be handing out “Come and Join Us” leaflets to try and attract new members and to encourage people to attend its next Town Hall concert which is on September 21.

The choir has already held one recruitment event this summer and that brought in a number of new recruits including three experienced singers taking the number of singers to around 60. There’s room for even more.

And there are plenty of concert dates lined up for existing and any new singers.

The first is on Sunday, September l, when the choir makes its third appearance at the Lowther Pavilion in Lytham.

It is taking part in Voices in Harmony, a concert with two barbershop groups, one men's the other ladies, to raise money for the Trinity Hospice in Blackpool.

The choir sang there in 2005 in support of a new heart unit at Blackpool's Victoria Hospital and returned three years later to sing in aid of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

The men are back on home ground on September 21 with a concert in Huddersfield Town Hall.

The singers will share the platform with Barnsley Youth Choir whose members are aged six to 19.

The choir, which was formed four years ago, has 200 members and it is expected that 160 to 170 of them will be making the trip to Huddersfield.

Honley's MD Steven Roberts has been friends with the Barnsley choir’s musical director Matt Wright for 10 years and has worked with the choir a number of times over the past 18.

He recently took some of the Honley singers to hear the youngsters sing and they were so impressed they booked them on the spot.
