Shelley Art Exhibition is showing works by both amateur and professional artists at Emmanuel Church, Shelley. Opening tonight at 6pm and then from 11am until 5pm on Saturday. Light lunches and refreshments available. Park at the Wyevale Garden Centre opposite the church. Sunday July 3 also.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway

North Yorkshire Moors Railway is travelling back to the swinging sixties with a weekend of psychedelic events at its stations in Pickering, Levisham and Goathland. Visitors are being invited to dress in sixties clothing while they enjoy music from the era and travel in vintage style. Tickets start at £13.50 for children. International magician John Danbury from Clayton West has entertained royalty - now he’s putting on a regular Sunday show for early diners at the Cinnamon Lounge in Horbury Bridge near Wakefield. Kicking off this Sunday at 5.30pm, he’ll be at the restaurant every weekend with two hours of magic tricks.

Jazz at the Keys: Dennis Rollins with the Ben Crosland Trio, at the Keys Restaurant, Byram Street. Gig starts at 8.30pm. Tickets £10 and £7
(students). Dennis has been hailed by Jazzwise magazine as ‘the most exciting British trombonist for decades.’

Kirklees Youth Brass Band at Greenhead Park bandstand from 2pm-4pm.

Brighouse town centre hosts a major brass band event. The Brighouse Lions Festival of Brass will be in town from 1pm and will feature 26 bands.

There will be a gala concert on the Saturday evening in the Central Methodist Church and the guest band will be Hebden Bridge Band. It starts at 7.15pm. Tickets are on sale at Fawcetts on Commercial Street in Brighouse or Kirklees Music on Bradford Road in Bailiff Bridge.

Courtyard Theatre, West Yorkshire Playhouse. The Barnbow Canaries is based on the real life story of Yorkshire women working in the Barnbow munitions factory during WWI. This production was commissioned in the 100th anniversary year of an explosion at the factory that killed 35 workers – a story that remained censored and rarely spoken of for many years. Thursday, July 7

The Rex Cinema, Elland, is hosting a live screening of Romeo and Juliet by the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company at 7.15pm. It is the first in a series of satellite broadcasts featuring major works from the West End and beyond. Tickets are £12 and £15 from the cinema on 01422 372140.

Thursday to Sunday, July 7 to 10

Experience live Shakespeare in Greenhead Park courtesy of Huddersfield Thespians, as they perform famous scenes from five of the The Bard’s best-known plays in outdoor settings.

Involving more than 30 amateur actors, both adults and children, there will be excerpts from Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night, Henry V, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Macbeth.

It is nearly 100 years since the Thespians last performed in Greenhead Park and their venture this year commemorates the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.

Each series of performances starts at 6.30pm from the Conservatory Cafe and will progress around the park until 9.45pm. While the shows are free, audience members are being asked to book a ticket from the Lawrence Batley Theatre, 01484 430528, www.thelbt.org

Huddersfield Choral Society’s Youth Choirs celebrate their 30th anniversary with a concert in Holy Trinity Church, Huddersfield. Former members of the Children’s Choir, Young Voices and Youth Choir have been invited to join the festivities. The concert starts at 7pm and tickets are from £5 to £10. Saturday and Sunday, July 9 and 10

More than 300 dance students, aged from three to 53, will take to the stage of the Lawrence Batley Theatre in a show to celebrate 15 years of the Katie Philpott School of Dance in Mirfield. The Great Yorkshire Show promises thousands of animals, a garden show, art exhibition, fashion shows and more than 1,300 stands to satisfy shoppers. It showcases the best of Yorkshire farming but offers much more than just rural exhibits. Watch out this year for a catwalk show of costumes designed by fashion students from Huddersfield University. Be entertained by Basil Fawlty, his long suffering wife Sybil and their confused waiter Manuel at Basil & Co The Comedy Dinner Show at Bradford’s Alhambra Theatre.
