Spectacular shows and musicals coming to West Yorkshire theatres in 2017

Hot tickets for the new year as theatres in Huddersfield, Leeds, Bradford and Halifax unveil their 2017 listings

The New Year is nearly here - and it' bringing an exciting line-up of drama, musicals, comedy and live acts with it.

We've had a look at what's in store at West Yorkshire theatres in 2017, from am-dram productions to touring West End shows, must-see comedians and more.

Lawrence Batley Theatre

The Lawrence Batley Theatre has some exciting shows lined up for the first half of 2017.

The Huddersfield Theatre will kick off 2017 with panto Dick Whittington by the Huddersfield Light Opera Theatre Company.

Also in January the Icarus Theatre Collective present Hamlet, with more drama coming from the Huddersfield Thespians in Grimm Up North in February.

Comedy fans can ejoy sets from Ruby Wax, Jonathan Pie, Lee Nelson, Reginald D Hunter and Rory Bremner.

The LBT’s 2017 programme also includes musicals Legally Blonde and Sweet Charity, comedies Billy Liar and Iolanthe, and dramas Bette and Joan and Sisterly Feelings.

There’s also Majikkon, Huddersfield’s Anime/Manga and Comic Con, as part of Huddersfield Literature Festival.

Victoria Theatre Halifax

Comedian Billy Pearce

The Victoria Theatre in Halifax has revealed its line up for the first half of 2017.

Cannon and Ball will visit in February for The Dressing Room, an evening of comedy and variety, and cricket fans can enjoy An Evening with Aggers and Tuffers.

Champions of Magic will present a night of impressive illusions, and there’s comedy from Ross Noble and Sean Locke.

Bradford panto king Billy Pearce will also present variety evening Billy Pearce and Friends to raise money for the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice.

Music fans can enjoy performances from Smokie, Rick Astley and local lad Roger Davies, as well as tributes the Bowie Experience and the ELO Experience.

And don’t miss the Easter pantomime, Robin Hood!

Leeds Grand Theatre

Leeds Grand Theatre has announced its listings for 2017, packed with musicals, drama, comedy and more.

The Leed theatre will kick off with Opera North’s productions of the Snow Maiden, Hansel and Gretel and Cinderella, January 21-February 5.

La Cage Aux Folles, Shirley Valentine, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Evita, Mama Mia, Thriller Live and Dirty Dancing are among its musical offerings.

If you prefer drama, there’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Ruth Rendell’s A Judgement in Stone and Jane Eyre are all lined up for 2017.

Comedy includes Sean Lock, I’m A Celebrity... runner-up Joel Dommett, John Richardson and spoof play-within-a-play The Play That Goes Wrong.

Huddersfield Town Hall

Slaithwaite Philharmonic Orchestra playing in Huddersfield Town Hall

Huddersfield Town Hall will present a mix of classical concerts, rock, pop, comedy and ‘In Conversation’ specials in 2017.

Slaithwaite Philharmonic Orchestra will kick things off in January, with the Orchestra of Opera North also perfoming the music of Bond in ‘Shaken & Stirred’.

The town hall will host the Yorkshire Brass Band Chapionships as well as concerts by Huddersfield Philharmonic and rock and pop acts including A Vision of Elvis, the 80s Invasion Tour, Simon and Garfunkel - Through the Years and Leo Sayer.

Comedian Al Murry will bring the Pub Landlord to town, and an ‘In Conversation series will see Jenni Murray chatting with Dr Sarah Falcus, Ian Rankin with David Barnett and Alan Johnson with Nick Ahad.

The Square Chapel for the Arts

The Square Chapel’s theatre offerings for 2017 include a mix of professional and amateur productions for all tastes.

In March the Beacon Actors will present The Edelweiss Pirates, a gritty, poignant play by Ayub Khan Din about the rebellious teens who stood up to the Nazi regime.

Dramas Butterfly and The Heart of Robin Hood are also on the bill for 2017, as well as John Godber comedy April in Paris.

In November Calder Valley Youth Theatre will take to the Square Chapel stage in Legally Blonde The Musical.

Audiences can also travel across Europe in just one night as the BE FESTIVAL goes on tour with a stop in Halifax.

Alexandra Burke in Sister Act

Bradford’s Alhambra Theatre has an exciting mix of opera, drama, comedy, dance and more for the New Year.

Operas Aida and La Boheme are on the bill in February, as well as Strictly Come Dancing stars Anton du Beke and Erin Boag in Swing Time.

Musicals Sister Act, Sunny Afternoon, the Full Monty, Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat, Dirty Dancing, The Commitments, Funnty Girl, Hairspray and Beautiful - The Carole King Musical are also on sale now.

Comedians Omid Djalili, Ed Bryne, Jimmy Carr and Stewart Lee are lined up, and kids will love Fantastic Mr Fox and The Addams Family.

And Elvis fans don’t want to miss top tribute act Ben Portsmouth on stage in February.

West Yorkshire Playhouse

The West Yorkshire Playhouse has a varied programme lined up for the first half of 2017.

Strictly Ballroom the Musical will dance on unil January 21, as will Roald Dahl classic The Witches.

Comedians Rory Bremner, Bridget Christie, Sue Perkins, Susan Calman and Stewart Lee are all on the calendar.

Kids will love Babe the Sheep Pig, The First Hippo on the Moon, The Scarecrows Wedding and The Gruffalo.

Much-loved comedy Pygmalion is lined up for February, with Romeo and Juliet, A Passionate Woman and The Grapes of Wrath also on the bill.

And fans of the Who can’t miss Tommy - billed as one of the greatest rock operas of all time, written by Pete Townshend.
