IT IS one of the biggest theatre announcements of the year. War Horse is heading out of London on tour.

This acclaimed National Theatre production, based on a story by Michael Morpurgo, will tour for the first time next year.

A 10 month, nine venue tour will bring this award-winning show to Bradford’s Alhambra Theatre in May 2014. Yes, that’s right, 2014.

Those dates may seem light years away but for many, this has been one of the shows of the decade. News of this first tour of the UK and Ireland has had box offices buzzing and it doesn’t start until next September.

The tour opens, perhaps aptly, in Devon which is where the show is set.

The show has been seen by more than 2.4 million people worldwide since its premiere at the National Theatre in 2007.

Now in its fourth year in London’s West End, War Horse consistently attracts sell-out houses at the New London Theatre.

The Broadway production continues its run at the Lincoln Center until January; a production has opened in Canada, while a North American tour began in Los Angeles in June 2012 and will visit 27 cities in its first year.

Productions are planned for Australia and for Berlin.

But when the National Theatre sets out on its UK tour, the only date in Yorkshire will be May 26- June 14, 2014.
