If you're a green fingered fan then the world famous Chelsea Flower Show is a horticultural highlight in your calendar.

Held each year in the month of May it is every gardening enthusiasts dream come true.

Here's everything you need to know abut this year's event, including how you can get tickets.

When is it?

The Chelsea Flower Show has been held in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, London every year since 1913 - although there were some gaps during WWII.

It is known as the most prestigious flower show in Britain and each year it is organised by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).

This year the event will run from Tuesday, May 23 until Saturday, May 27.

What is it about?

Formally known as the Great Spring Show, it is held for five days. The event attracts visitors from around the world.

It was once Britain's largest flower show but it has now been overtaken by RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show.

The Chelsea Flower Show is reportedly attended by 157,000 each year.

There are four award categories:

  • Flora Gardens and floral exhibits
  • Hogg Exhibits of trees
  • Knightian Exhibits of vegetables, including herbs
  • Lindley Exhibits of special educational or scientific interest
  • Grenfell Exhibits of pictures, photographs, floral arrangements and floristry

What are this year's highlights?

Guests can explore the Great Pavilion which will house 100 displays from the world's best florists.

This year there will also be a garden dedicated to the British and Commonwealth citizens who died in the First and Second World wars.

There will also be five show gardens , five fresh gardens and nine artisan gardens for people to discover.

Can I still buy tickets?

There are three types of tickets you can buy: a day ticket, tickets for 3:30pm and tickets for 5:30pm.

If you are a member of the Royal Horticultural Society you can buy day tickets starting at £63 up to £80. Tickets for an allocated time start at £36 and go up to £63.

Non member day tickets are £100 and allocated time tickets range from £41 to £50. However, with less than one week to go before the show, non member tickets are limited. So if you're hoping to attend this year it's best to book now.

Can I watch it on TV?

Yes. BBC2 will be airing 15 episodes of coverage.

The first episode will air on Sunday, May 21 at 5pm until 8pm and will be a preview of the gardens and exhibits.

At 7:30 presenters Joe Swift and Sophie Raworth will provide coverage as members of the royal family come to visit.

Coverage of the actual show will kick off the following day at 3:45pm.
