The Handmaid's Tale has taken the US by storm and this week Channel 4 revealed that it would be bringing the series to the UK "this month".

But thanks to a little digging we've found out exactly what time and day the first episode will air.

The series is currently being shown in America on Hulu - a video streaming service much like Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Here's everything you need to know about the show including cast member, plot line and most importantly - when it will be on TV.

What is the Handmaid's Tale About?

The series is based on the best-selling 1985 novel by Canadian writer Margaret Atwood.

Margaret says of her novel: "My rule for the book was I would not put anything into it that human beings had not done at some time in someplace already in history. Everything in the book has a precedent.

"For instance, the Handmaids and women in general are not allowed to read. It was illegal for slaves in America to read, just for instance. You can go through all of the different pieces in the novel and ask me where in history it happened and I can tell you."

Margaret's dystopian story is set in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly part of the United States. The name Gilead comes from the Hebrew Bible where it is the name of three people and two geographic places.

Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birth rate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state.

Under strict new laws women are no longer allowed to own property, earn money or read. And those who are able to reproduce are taken away from their families.

The story is told by Offred, a fertile woman, who has been captured by the government and given to a wealthy family. She is forced to sleep with her 'commander' (the man who owns her) so she can bear his children and carry on the bloodline.

Offred is known as a handmaid and she is one of many. The women are forced to wear shapeless red gowns and white hats with 'wings' around the sides to cover their faces.

Offred's commander, Fred Waterford, is a high-ranking official and although the pair are only supposed to have contact during 'the ceremony' (a ritual where they have sex whilst his wife Serena is present) he begins having an illegal and ambiguous relationship with her.

He gives Offred fashion magazines, cosmetics and clothes and also meets her in his study after hours where he allows her to read.

Through another handmaid called Ofglen, Offred learns of a resistance group called Mayday - an underground network attempting to overthrow the government from the inside.

What time is it on?

The series is currently being aired in America on Hulu

Earlier this week Channel 4 announced that it had acquired the rights to the US TV show and would be airing it "later this month".

Jay Hunt, chief creative officer for Channel 4, said: "The Handmaid's Tale is a chilling and frighteningly topical exploration of a world where women are subjugated.

"I'm delighted that Channel 4 viewers will get to see this critically acclaimed take on a classic novel."

The first episode will air on Sunday May 28 at 9pm. The show will run for 10 episodes and will also be able on 4OD shortly after it comes on TV.
