Music retailer HMV returned to Huddersfield today – with a low key opening.

The famous old store opened again in the Kingsgate Centre two years after the previous shop nearby was shut down when the company went into administration.

The shop was one of 66 closed at the time as administrators fought to save the company.

HMV re-launched in Huddersfield without a fanfare under new manager Andy Baxter, an experienced store manager from Doncaster.

Andy, who joined HMV as a teenager 30 years ago, hasn’t worked at Huddersfield before. He heads a 14-strong team.

The store sells music, film and entertainment merchandise and the first item sold was an album by American punk band Green Day.

Andy said: “We’ve received a lot of positive feedback about our return to Huddersfield from local people and we’re really excited to be back.

“Whilst we were away our focus returned to music, film and related entertainment merchandise. I’m sure that customers both old and new will love the new offer, especially our extensive new range of vinyl.”

Sales assistants were hired locally for the new-look store.

HMV chief executive Ian Topping said: “We would like to thank our many loyal customers in Huddersfield for their continued enthusiasm and support for the re-opening of their store. We look forward to once again providing the people of Huddersfield with the very best film and music.”
