Owners WD Huddersfield Ltd said the £15m scheme, which could create up to 150 jobs, would boost Huddersfield’s evening economy by encouraging people to linger in the town centre after work to enjoy a meal and take in a film.

The 56,000sq ft development will include a 20,000sq ft first floor multiplex cinema providing at least two screens along with six themed casual dining restaurants at mall level. It also includes using Kingsgate’s recently refurbished car park to provide safe and secure night time parking.

A new entrance will be provided in Cross Church Street and the pavement outside the entrance will be built out. The plan will see the demise of shop units 14 to 24 Cross Church Street, currently occupied by businesses including a newsagent, nail bar, hairdresser, herbalist and fast food outlet.

The scheme, which will link to the existing mall, is planned to open in late 2016. It means WD has abandoned its former proposals for Kingsgate 2 – an ambitious £40m scheme to extend the shopping complex with an additional department store.
