Huddersfield University’s music department is putting on a  series of seasonal performances called Winter Warmers.

The concerts will be in St Paul’s Hall and the Phipps Concert Hall and cover a mix of organ recitals, piano recitals, orchestral concerts and much more.

They are free for students and the lunchtime concerts are £3 for adults, £2 for pensioners and the evening concert ticket prices are £7.50 and £5.

It opened with an organ recital by Simon Earl, Assistant Director of Music at Wakefield Cathedral, on Wednesday 4 December in St Paul’s Hall.

Other highlights include a lunchtime concert with a Chrismassy theme by The University Chamber Choir and Baroque Ensemble on Thursday, December 12.

Called Christmas in 17th Century Saxony it will feature motets for the Christmas season from early baroque Germany by Scheidt and Schein and the miniature Christmas oratorio by Schütz: Historia der Geburt Jesu Christi.

On the same day but later in the evening the university’s Big Band and its Small Band will stage an evening of jazz. The Big Band will be joined by a several student soloists and ensembles and the band will play music by Duke Ellington, Sammy Nestico, Bob Curnow and Gordon Goodwin.

On Monday, December 16 the university Choir and Symphony Orchestra will be joined by soloists from the Royal Northern College of Music to perform music by Wagner, Verdi and Mozart. The invited soloists are sopranos Lauren Lea Fielder and Catrin Woodruff, Heather Lowe who is a mezzo-soprano, Tom Morss, tenor, and Stefan Berkieta, bass.

The last concert in December will be given by The university’s Early Music Ensemble and Symphonic Wind Orchestra. This group of students will perform medieval songs on reconstructed instruments.
