The drama series is set in an eerie fictional town called Twin Peaks, Washington. It was created by novelist and screenwriter Mark Frost and David Lynch - a surrealist director - whose credits include The Elephant Man and Blue Velvet.

Although the series was a crime drama, it was its surreal elements and quirky characters which made it such a hit with viewers.

Series 1

Sheryl Lee as Laura Palmer

The show followed the murder investigation of homecoming queen Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), whose corpse was found wrapped in a sheet of clear plastic in the first episode.

Eccentric FBI agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) was called into the town to head the case.

His investigations revealed that Laura was leading a double life. She had been cheating on her boyfriend, football captain Bobby Briggs (Dana Ashbrook), with biker James Hurley (James Marshall).

Laura had also been prostituting herself with the help of Leo Johnson (Eric Da Re), a local truck driver, and Jacques Renault (Walter Olkewicz), a drug dealer.

After he examined Laura's body, Dale discovered the letter R inserted underneath her fingernail and believed her death was connected to another girl's murder in southwestern Washington.

Series 2

FBI agent Dale Cooper

Laura's father was eventually unmasked as her killer, although he appeared to have been under the control of an evil spirit called Bob.

Before Agent Cooper left Twin Peaks, he discovered a former FBI colleague called Windom Earle, had followed him to the town to seek revenge.

Earle had escaped from a mental institution after he killed his wife in fit of jealousy when he learned she had been having an affair with Cooper.

Cooper's investigations eventually led him to the mysterious Black Lodge where he tried to rescue his new love, Annie Blackburn (Heather Graham) from Earle's clutches. Cooper then learned that the lodge served as a portal to another dimension.

In the confusion that followed, Cooper and Annie appeared to have escaped, but in a chilling final twist, it was revealed that the FBI agent had been replaced with a doppelganger, and that the real Cooper was trapped in the Black Lodge.

Series two ended with Laura's ghost saying: “I’ll see you in 25 years."

Twin Peaks ran for two series from 1990 and was followed by a film called Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me in 1992.

What's the new series about?

Director David Lynch

Director David Lynch is keeping tight lipped about the upcoming series but has confirmed that "it is not a remake. The story continues".

It will take place in the present day, 25 years after series two ended.

Mark Frost's 2016 book - The Secret History Of Twin Peaks - might give viewers a few clues. . .

Following Dale's investigation on Laura's murder he gets hold of a box containing “a huge dossier”.

A female FBI agent is given the task of analyzing the documents and along the way she begins to discover secrets about the people living in Twin Peaks.

The blurb continues: "Along the way, she (female FBI agent) discovers secrets about the lives of the town's residents, but also investigative reports from Dale Cooper, who has since vanished, newspaper clippings, an autopsy report, and other classified information.

"What happened since the death of the young woman? And why did an anonymous 'archivist' compile such a thorough dossier on Twin Peaks and its origins?"
