If you find yourself at a loose end today, never fear - there's plenty of things going on across Kirklees.

Here's three things to do in and around the district today (Monday, September 22):

  1. Learn a bit of ballroom dancing - If you've been inspired by the slick moves on Strictly Come Dancing, pull on your dancing shoes and head to Howden Clough Community Centre in Birstall for Shall We Dance?, a weekly ballroom and Latin dance class for beginners. Have a go at the waltz, quickstep, cha cha cha and jive, whether you're a seasoned pro or a newcomer to the dancefloor. The class runs 1.30pm-2.30pm and entry costs £4.

  2. Remember fallen heroes - Learn more about local men who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Great War. Spen Valley Historical Society and Kirklees Council has produced an exhibition at Heckmondwike Library in Walkley Lane to remember those who fought for King and country. The exhibit is open from today, 9.30am-5pm.

  3. Make the most of the sunshine - We're heading into autumn, so why not make the most of the fair weather while it's here and take a stroll around Yorkshire Sculpture Park? You can check out the latest work from Turner Prize short-listed artist Fiona Banner, who has taken over the entire Longside Gallery. Entitled Chinook, the huge installation features two pairs of disembodied giant copter blades hung from the ceiling, which rotate in opposition to one another at various speeds and overlap to give the unnerving illusion that they are about to collide.
