It's a day for Yorkshire folk to show their local pride and celebrate God's Own Country.

Yorkshire Day is an annual celebration of the largest county in England — and this year the celebrations will be led by our neighbours in Halifax.

Each year a different Yorkshire town or city leads the celebrations — and Halifax was chosen for 2016.

Preparations are underway for Yorkshire Day, with Yorkshire themed window displays, family activities and a parade planned.

Mayor of Calderdale, Clr Howard Blagbrough said: "I’m really looking forward to hosting Yorkshire Day in Halifax, it’s a great honour. We’re lucky enough to live in this fantastic county and I think that’s definitely cause for celebration. We’re hoping everyone joins in to mark this very special day."

Events planned in Halifax include:

  • The formal raising of the Yorkshire Flag at Halifax Town Hall;
  • A reception for 200 civic dignataries from across Yorkshire;
  • A Skype link with Yorkshire people celebrating in New Zealand;
  • A presentation of buttonholes for the dignataries by Victoria Sugden, now aged 20, who performed the same role as a seven year old when Halifax last hosted Yorkshire Day in 2003.;
  • A parade through the Halifax from 10am, led by a brass band;
  • A Yorkshire themed public service at Halifax Minster.
