It's an event that has gone from strength to strength, each year becoming bigger than the last and becoming a permanent staple in the Huddersfield Musical Calender, writes Mikey Baird.

Oxjam Huddersfield 2013 carried on in this way. Eight venues took part this year (the event started with just one, Zephyr, in 2007) and an unbelievable 56 bands. All for just £5. In the past it has been 100% Huddersfield based acts this year it has spread it’s wings and brought the best from around Yorkshire to take part.

The beautiful thing about an event like this is the diversity in music you will get throughout the venues.

It can only make a music lover proud to see this sort of talent on display over multiple genres.

In The Parish the always on form Leeds Post-Rock band Envoys left the crowd open mouthed with their highly intelligent, instrumental wall of sound and monster sized riffs.

If you were in Bar 122 Live you would have been treated to, amongst others, The Orchid Family who have made a welcome return to the live scene after a short hiatus, once again delivering a set of blistering art rock.

If this wasn’t your vibe that didn’t matter, you could head along to Verve and catch Byron Street Social. Here is a band who have quickly made a name for themselves with some high profile supports over the last year. They get the crowd moving like only they can with their roots, reggae, hip-hop, indie mash-up.

Rhubarb had the Sons Of O’Hara to close their night, delivering a set of pure funk and groove that gives even the coolest of cats no choice but to shake it.

It is impossible to talk about every band who played but it was truly a night to behold, just a few of the other acts who got in on the fundraising included – Feeds, AllUsOnDrugs, Adore, Kamara, Lost Ground, Ables Army, Azika and many, many more.

Also, aside from the venues already mentioned, Head Of Steam, Kings Head, West Tavern all deserve applause for helping to host such an amazing event for such a good cause.

This year’s event took over £3000 and the organisers have promised next year will be even bigger with more bands and more venues. Roll on 2014.
