But Waites showed his world championship qualities to hit back with a 156 checkout in the penultimate leg and then notch a 180 on the way to finishing off his opponent.

It was a fantastic ending to Waites’ tournament, with the Yorkshireman having had to come from behind to win several of his early-round matches. And it was also a stunning return to action following shoulder surgery.

“I put my heart and soul into winning this, and it’s an unbelievable feeling,” said Waites.“It’s great to pick up the £100,000 prize-money, but for me it’s being world champion again that means everything. To be honest, the cash doesn’t matter.”

And beaten opponent Smith added: “Scott was incredible against me. I just had no answer to him.

“I’d obviously have loved to have won, but Scott was a very worthy winner.

“He had to dig in earlier in the tournament and got his reward.”
