This dramatic video shows the moment moorland set alight above Stalybridge producing huge plumes of smoke and flames which drifted towards Huddersfield.
The remarkable clip shows flames climbing up the moors, in Buckton Quarry, Carrbrook.
At one point the entire hill appears to be glowing and on fire.
Fire crews were called to the blaze shortly after 9pm on Sunday.
One resident told our sister paper the M.E.N : “Luckily the wind is blowing the fire away from the houses.
“But the whole hillside is up in flames. It’s absolutely thick, black smoke and there’s a really strong smell in the air.
“The wind is blowing the smoke towards Ashton and Oldham. The wind is causing major problems.”
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said the grass fires have since been extinguished.
However, the team remains at the scene of another moorland blaze at Dovestones Reservoir, Saddleworth.
The spokesman said crews have been at the scene since 3am, but the fire is understood to not be as serious as the earlier blaze.
