Ready, steady, cook!

Two Huddersfield chefs went head to head to kick off this year's Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival.

Ashley Coley, the Huddersfield Veg Man and head chef at the Royal Ancient, took on John Smith's Stadium sous chef David Stewart-Pybus in a live cooking challenge in the festival's cooking demonstrations marquee.

The culinary challenge was hosted by Yorkshire Chef Phil Leverington, aka the Demo Chef, who is compering this year's festival.

Both cooks had to use locally sourced ingredients, including some by producers at the festival, and had 45 minutes to whip up a starter and a main course.

Ashley prepared scallops with a pea risotto, and salmon with saffron, jersey royal potatoes and Yorkshire asparagus.

David opted to make duck and vegetable parcels, with a main course of pork marinated in John Smiths ale and roasted sweet potatoes.

The demo marquee will host a variety of live cooking shows over the weekend, with more head-to-head challenges planned.

Featured chefs will also be sharing their culinary expertise with visitors.
