JANUARY is the detox month, time to repair the damage to skin caused by Christmas excess, the drying effects of central heating and a lack of fresh air and sunlight.

Beauty experts say that one of the best ways to give skin a fresher look is to regularly exfoliate, removing dead skin cells that sit on the surface, blocking pores and making your complexion look dull.

Then follow up with a good moisturiser, both to protect skin from the harsher winter weather and to lock in moisture. Dry, flaky skin is more prone to spots and blemishes as it allows bacteria to get under the surface layer.

If you’re looking for beauty products with added benefits and no nasties then check out the Jason Anti-Ageing range sold in health food shops.

The Tea Time Green Tea Moisturising Crème, £11.29 for 120g, is rich in natural botanical ingredients and has no parabens preservatives.

British spa brand Elemis also has a range perfect for treating dull skin. Its Tri-Enzyme resurfacing face wash has an exfoliating action and is currently being sold as part of a Brighten and Resurface Cleansing Duo for £29. The face wash and accompanying Soothing Apricot toner are both in 200ml bottles.

Last, but not least, give tired skin a bath time treat. Apply a face mask and let the warm, steamy atmosphere help it to deep clean the pores.

Champneys, another spa brand, has a Skin Resurfacing Mask, £12.50, that promises to gently exfoliate and then feed the skin with Vitamin E, the top ingredient in many anti-ageing products.
