HELP needed from sweet-toothed readers. Was there ever a sugar shortage in the 1960s or 1970s?

Old friend Chris Marsden poses the question after a recent night out at the pub with friends.

“Graham Sykes was recalling the sugar shortage of his youth. I poured scorn on the idea and so did Nick, David and Heather.

“But could Graham be right?”

Graham is 55 and lived in Meltham until he was 18.

Any shortage he remembers would, of course, be post-rationing.

Chris says: “I recall panic buying of candles, lavatory paper, salt, flour etc, at about the time of the three day week but was there ever an actual sugar shortage in the 60s or 70s?

“Or perhaps is was just Meltham.”

Can anyone help?
