FEW cats have their own Facebook page, but then Dave is a phenomenon.
I hesitate to describe Ian Towers as his owner because cats don’t have owners. They allow people to look after them and they may, if you are very fortunate, offer affection. But only on their terms.
Dave may have been welcomed into the bosom of a family but, of that family, he chose Ian. Cat people will understand what I mean. Man and beast have bonded so well that Ian has to sneak out of the house without being seen, otherwise Dave will follow.
And Dave gets around for a feline, as his Facebook page shows.
He has posted photographs of himself in the jungle, at the White House in Washington, on military manoeuvres, at Stonehenge, even on the moon. He can also be seen in his early days as an aviator, a stunt cat and as a model on the catwalk (where else?)
Part of his legendary status comes from the fact that he returned from the dead, like Lazarus. Ian, arriving home one dark winter's eve, found Dave’s body near the driveway of his Honley home. Overcame with grief, he telephoned the rest of the family, who were in a local hostelry, with the news. If he could have found the perpetrator of this foul deed, he admits he would have taken fearful revenge.
Thankfully, he didn’t, because as he attempted to move the body, with great care and compassion, he discovered it was a piece of shrubbery. Feeling tired, emotional and a little foolish, he went to bed without making any further calls to correct the dire news he had earlier imparted.
The next morning, a still heavily grieving Barbara pulled back the curtains and was shocked to see Dave, alive and well, at the French windows. He was as right as rain and expecting to be fed.
Dave might have quoted Mark Twain: “Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.’’ But he settled, instead, for food and a cuddle.
Since then, followers on his Facebook page, The Dave Cat Phenomenon, have grown, although he ignores the adulation. But then, don’t all cats?
