THIS is the age of super heroes. In the new film Avengers Assemble, Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor and Captain America are recruited to save the world.

But who is this new bloke on the block? Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it Superman?

No, this is Elderly Man. The senior citizen of super heroes is coming to a street near you soon, courtesy of Japanese scientists.

They are developing a lightweight exoskeleton cybersuit to help the frail and ageing members of their society. It will give them the strength of body builders and total freedom of movement. They will acquire superhuman abilities.

The researchers who are turning science fiction into fact are at Tokyo University and were given the brief of helping senior citizens.

Instead of the bulky robotic outfits that have been tried in the past, they have developed a new lightweight suit of rubber that uses compressed air.

They hope to be hiring them out for £115 a month by next year. Put me down for one.

If they catch on, old folk will be forming their own Avenger groups and taking hooligans to task on an ad hoc basis.

Throwing them up into trees could be one way of imposing instant retribution.

“And mind you stay there for the next 12 hours or I’ll put you over my knee.

“And as my power-weight ratio is 400 times greater than anything made before, that would be the mother of all spankings.”

Once the idea caught on, the threat would be enough to send miscreants scrambling up into the lower branches on their own as Dangerous Dans and Doras roamed the streets and made them safe.

I’d volunteer straight away to be an Avenger, especially if Joanna Lumley was in my team. And am I too old to make a comeback at football?

On top of this cyber news, I read that Peugeot are developing an electric car that will help boost the driving ability of over-65s by monitoring their concentration, stress levels and driving habits.

By heck, stick me in a suit, put me behind the wheel and move over Jason Button.

It’s too late for this year, but put me down for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

I could be on for triple gold.
