THANK goodness the snow has gone. But we will still be enduring dark nights for some time to come so it will not go amiss if I again mention visibility.

A friend was one of the army of highway people who went out at all hours driving snowploughs and gritters to keep the main roads open.

“If you were to take your children out in a speedboat and they can’t swim, what would you do?” he said.

“You’d make sure they were wearing lifejackets, wouldn’t you? So why do people go out in the dark, often with kids, wearing dark clothing? They are an accident waiting to happen.

“The number of times I’ve had to brake, when driving the snowplough, because of people walking in the road or crossing the road in dark clothing is daft. You just can’t see them.

“Look at most of the coats hanging up in any school, pub or club and they are all dark material.

“It doesn’t take a genius to work out that in a dark coat you will not be seen on a quiet road.”

All it needs to add a layer of safety to you and your family is a reflective armband or sash when going out in the dark. It’s common sense.
