READER Kevin M Hirst was delighted to read about the White House pub which is on the moors between Meltham and Slaithwaite and has closed after more than 200 years.

Kevin says: “We own a very interesting house just below the pub. It used to be the blacksmith’s shop, which serviced the horses and carts. I have been told that the Holt Head road was like the M62 of its day and an important link for traffic going over the tops.

“We have had many a happy hour in the White House over the years and it’s a shame it has shut. I remember the guy on the piano on Sunday nights and the barmaid who looked like Margaret Rutherford.

“A true classic pub with good beer and good food. We are so lucky living here and love the sense of history. It’s such a shame the pub shut.”

Kevin says their house was also a hippy commune in the 1970s.

“Has anyone got any old photographs?” he asks.
