EVERY beauty consultant, no matter which brand they work for, will say that a woman’s most essential cosmetic purchase is a good sunscreen.

At this time of year they’d probably say the second most important is a bronzing powder, because although it’s now widely known that the sun’s UV rays are the single biggest cause of skin ageing, our love affair with looking sun-kissed and golden is far from over.

This weekend, all the major beauty houses in Huddersfield’s Boots store are joining forces for a Fake Me, Don’t Bake me event.

Consultants will be offering skin checks, handing out skincare advice and giving summer bronze make-overs to customers.

For a £5 charge, which will be donated to the Macmillan Cancer Support charity, customers will also get a goodie bag and be entered into a store raffle.

The organiser, Elizabeth Arden consultant Harriet Stenhouse, says many women shy away from using sunscreen on their faces because they believe it will make them look pale. “They think that the higher factor lotions are going to give them a white face, but all of us have products that are light, can’t be seen, but give high protection,” she said.

Harriet will be handing out cards with pictures of skin changes and moles so that customers can self-check for signs of skin cancer.

The event begins today and ends on Saturday.
